NICE is called on nurses to take a key role in spotting and treating mental health problems in pregnant women and new mums.

The institute said an estimated one in seven women has a mental health disorder before and or after the birth of a child, with the potential for serious long term consequence.

In latest guidance, published today, it urges healthcare professionals to regularly ask this group of women about their mental wellbeing, taking account of the whole family's welfare, and not to focus exclusively on a specific mental illness.
