Guidelines on catheter associated infection published

New US guidance have been published to advice continence nurses on preventing catheter-associated urinary tract infections

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published the updated guidance entitles Guideline for Prevention of Catheter-associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI).

This is an update of guidelines first published in 1981.

The new guidelines;

  • Include new research and technological advancements for preventing CAUTI,
  • Considers the needs of patients in non-acute care settings and patients requiring long-term urinary catheterisation,
  • Places greater emphasis on initiatives to prevent complications,
  • Provides metrics for outcomes and process measures.

Recommendations for further research are listed.
