Half of students abused on wards

  • Comment
Nearly half of all nursing students have experienced verbal abuse while on the ward, say researchers.

A study, published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing, asked 114 third-year nursing students in England about their experiences on wards. It found 45% of respondents had experienced verbal abuse, including death threats, and 65% were aware of other students being verbally abused.

In 65% of cases, the abuse involved patients, in 16% it involved visitors or relatives, and in 20% it involved other healthcare workers.

The majority of incidents occurred in general medical, mental health and general surgical clinical areas.
