Find out how to make the most of your skills, where in your career they can take you next, and celebrate 70 years of the NHS
June gives you two chances to visit Nursing Times Careers Live and check out the new job opportunities open to you.
The workforce shortage means your skills are in demand – and it could be a good chance to move jobs or care settings to take your nursing career on a different path. Healthcare providers in the NHS, independent and charity sectors are looking for nurses like you to help them in various disciplines and settings. We’ve been linking nurses with new employers for nearly four years, and have enjoyed great success at helping them find the next step on their professional path.
In Leeds on 16 June, we have a session from Rebecca Smith, director of engagement at our event partner NHS Employers, talking about how to prepare for job interviews and acquire skills that will help you progress.
We also have a session with Jackie Smith, chief executive of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, in an interactive session that will guide you through the principles of a fitness-to-practise case, so you can see from the inside how the panel makes its decisions. Devon Partnership Trust will highlight its preceptorship programmes and available opportunities and, in a tribute to the NHS’s 70th birthday on 5 July, Betty Smithson, former assistant director of nursing education and member of the NHS Retirement Fellowship will look at how nursing has evolved over the years.
A lunchtime reception will also take place to help students understand how to transition to their newly qualified status.
In London on 30 June, Sue Covill, director of development and employment at NHS Employers will reprise the session on preparing for interviews, and look at how to have professional development conversations with managers. Tom and Nicola Ray, co-founders of Resilience + Co will present their moving story of how their lives were affected by sepsis, and inspire and guide you to cope with stress and adversity.
Jackie Smith will also reprise her interactive session, You’re the Panel Live, while Somerset Partnership Foundation Trust will look at what a rewarding career looks like with them.
Because these two events are the closest in our portfolio to the 70th birthday of the NHS, as a tribute, we are running our own 1940s tea party. We’ve got cakes, bunting and tea throughout both afternoons, and two vintage makeover studios to give delegates victory rolls, luscious lips and 40s flicks.
At lunchtimes in Leeds and London, we’ll have a lindy hop dance demonstration, along with a taster class so you can get involved, and both events will be rounded off with swing bands and drinks receptions. In Leeds, Atomic Swing Band will take to the stage while, in London, Nouveau Lounge will be bringing their vintage vibe.
Come along to find a new job, get some career development advice or just to celebrate the nursing contribution to the NHS on its 70th birthday.
