The Health Protection Agency will share its experience of handling the public health risk of Polonium-210 in a conference in London on March 27.

The agency will reveal how the death of Alexander Litvinenko from radiation poisoning in November last year and the risk that members of the public might have been exposed to radiation required an unprecedented public health response.

As part of its approach, the HPA's radiation scientists quickly developed a mass urine testing process and worked with NHS Direct in following up hundreds of people who were potentially at risk.

Further information about the conference, to be held at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, can be found at www.hpa-events.org.uk/Polonium.
