Treatments for sinusitis, such as amoxicillin and budesonide, are no more effective than placebo, a Southampton University study of 240 adults suggests. ‘Neither an antibiotic nor a topical steroid alone or in combination are effective in altering the symptom severity,’ the authors said.

 Nearly three-quarters of adults with conditions such as diabetes, chronic kidney disease and stroke also have hypertension, a US study shows. In 4,646 adults, hypertension was found in 76.8% with diabetes, 81.8% with chronic kidney disease and 69.5% with stroke.

 Public health nurses can help reduce head injuries, according to Plymouth University researchers. ‘Those at greatest risk seem to be young men and older people. There is a role for public health nurses in developing primary prevention campaigns,’ they said.

 Oral prednisolone is as effective as IV prednisolone in treating COPD exacerbations, claim Dutch researchers. Of 200 patients, divided into oral and IV treatment groups, there was an improvement in spirometry for both. The study is to be published in the journal Chest.
