Increase in ski trauma injuries

  • Comment
Incidence of traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries caused by skiing and snowboarding accidents is increasing, warn Canadian researchers

They pooled data from 24 studies published between 1990 and the end of 2004.
Findings from one article indicated that the percentage of head injuries among skiers increased from 12% to 15% between 1993 and 1997.
Over the same period the number of snowboarders who suffered head injuries rose fivefold, the authors said.
Traumatic brain injury was the leading cause of death among skiers and snowboarders. It accounted for 50% to 88% of fatalities at international ski resorts.
