Increased fluids with lemon may help to prevent catheter encrustation

  • Comment
Increasing fluid intake with lemon may provide a simple, inexpensive and effective strategy for reducing rates of catheter encrustation.

This is the conclusion of a research study carried out by Azhar Khan, research fellow at the BioMed Centre, Bristol.

Twenty four patients with problems of catheter blockage were randomised to one of three groups. One group increased fluid intake, the second received lemon juice and the third received potassium citrate.

At the end of each intervention patients were crossed over to another groups until they had tried all three strategies.
