The latest information about the care of inpatients in English NHS hospitals was published today by the Information Centre for health and social care.

More than 14 million records of hospital care have been used to compile the hospital episode statistics database for 2005-2006.

The database shows a 7% increase in day case admissions and a 5% increase in emergency admissions.

Patients waited an average of 78 days for elective care, down from 84 days the previous year.

Patients stayed in hospital for an average of 6.6 days, compared with 7.1 days in 2004-2005.
