Lord Darzi quits as government minister

Health minister Lord Ara Darzi is quitting his post as health minister, according to Health Service Journal.

Lord Darzi will return to surgery but remain an adviser to the government.

Nursing Times’ sister publication Health Service Journal understands a government announcement is expected tomorrow.

Lord Darzi, a surgeon at Imperial College Healthcare Trust, was appointed a minister in 2007 as part of prime minister Gordon Brown’s ‘government of all the talents’ initiative.

HSJ understands the resignation is being attributed by the government to his workload as both a minister and surgeon. He is said to be working about six and a half days a week.

Lord Darzi’s official leaving date will be 21 July, the beginning of the summer recess, it is understood.

That is a loss - I hope another minister takes up the innovation challenge!
