People with cancer tell us that the direct impact of cancer on their personal finances can change with time. Some, who might not have financial concerns at diagnosis, may find that they run into issues later – during or after treatment for example. Some people spend their savings to cover unexpected costs while they’re undergoing treatment, like increases in heating bills and travel costs, whilst others have said that they’ve had to give up buying Christmas or birthday gifts or eating out. Others may have even sold personal items as a last resort. We want everyone with cancer to know what support is available to them so that they know their options.
Please check in with the people you support to make sure that they’re aware that their needs may change, and that Macmillan can help. Our range of free financial information booklets includes Planning and managing your finances, Managing your debt, and Help with the cost of cancer.
The expert teams on Macmillan Support Line (0808 808 00 00) include financial guides who can help with budgeting and financial planning, including taxes and banking.
