Man coughs up rat in Pfizer and MHRA counterfeit medicines ad

A man coughing up a dead rat after taking counterfeit medicines is to be shown to cinema-goers across the UK in a campaign launched by Pfizer and the MHRA. Scroll down to watch the video

The advert is part of an aggressive campaign by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and patient groups to warn people about buying prescription pills over the internet - which often turn out to be counterfeit and potentially dangerous.

Research shows more than 330,000 men purchase prescription-only medicines from unregulated sources every year in the UK.

  • I think this advert is gross, as a pharmacist I appreciate the seriousness of counterfit medicines, but this is just too disgusting to watch.
    The message will be lost.

  • I agree this is awful to watch. But like most adverts people will watch for the first time then turn away or turn off after that. Not sure if it will have the impact expected but people will talk about long after watching it and may be that is how the message will get across. Definately an issue that needs dealing with

  • Personally I find this advert shameful. Not only because how graphic the image of the dead rat is but also is because past experience of smoking adverts and poster campaigns have shown this type of message will only offend and the true message will get lost. Therefore this advert which has clearly gone too far trying to make an impact is a complete waste of money. surely the pharmaceutical companies could spend this money on lowering the cost of specialist life saving drugs instead?
