Millions being wasted on expensive drugs, MPs warn

  • Comment
Doctors must prescribe more generic drugs, rather than their more expensive but identical branded alternatives, MPs have claimed.
According to a report into medications costs by the Public Accounts Committee, more than £100m is being wasted every year because cheaper versions are available.

Pharmaceuticals manufacturers should put information about manufacturing costs of each drug on labels, said the committee’s chair, Edward Leigh.

Mr Leigh added: ‘GPs must concentrate more on following official guidelines, increasing the prescribing of generic drugs where clinically appropriate.’
