MMR uptake still below target

Uptake of the MMR vaccine among children is still short of the target to ensure immunity amongst the general population, figures have shown.

Uptake of the MMR vaccine among children is still short of the target to ensure immunity amongst the general population, figures have shown.

Statistics for 2006-7 show uptake has risen by 1% to 85% in England - but this is still short of the 95% needed for 'herd immunity'.

Confidence in the vaccine was hit by research, which has since been discredited, that linked it with autism.

Following the article by Dr Andrew Wakefield, published in the Lancet in 1998, uptake of the vaccine dropped to 80%.
