THOUSANDS more health visitors will be needed to deliver the government's ambitious plan to provide intensive support for the most vulnerable families, Unite/CPHVA has said.
The government is piloting a system that provides much greater support to the most socially excluded families.
An additional 4,000 full-time health visitors would be needed if the system were to be rolled out for the 120,000 families in England requiring intensive support, Unite/CPHVA said in its response to the government consultation on health visitors, Facing the Future.
The union also called for a cap on health-visitor caseloads of 300 families. Research by the Family and Parenting Institute recently revealed that some health visitors had caseloads consisting of more than 1,000 children.
