Nearly 90% of US nurses take vitamin, mineral or herbal supplements, survey results suggest.

More than 80% of nurses in the US also recommend dietry supplements to their patients, according to the findings.

The survey, carried out in October by the Council for Responsible Nutrition – a US trade association – involved 1,177 healthcare professionals, of whom 277 were registered nurses and nurse practitioners.

Among the nurse, 59% said they used supplements regularly, 27% occasionally and 3% seasonally. The majority reported taking them for ‘overall health and wellness benefits’.

As many as 87% said they personally asked their patients about the use of supplements and 43% said they usually brought the subject up themselves.
