The number of deaths from superbugs continues to rise in England and Wales, according to latest government data.

The number of death certificates mentioning Staphylococcus aureus infection increased each year from 1993 to 2005, latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show.

An increase in the number of death certificates specifying MRSA, from 51 in 1993 to 1,629 in 2005, accounted for almost all of this increase in deaths.

Additionally, in 2005 there were 3,807 death certificates which mentioned C. diff, a 69% increase from 2004.
