New C. Diff monitoring system begins

  • Comment
The web-based surveillance scheme for Clostridium difficile has been modified to take into account patients who have been infected before entering hospitals.

It is hoped that the provision of an NHS Number will help to identify individuals who have had stool samples in more than one setting over a 28-day period.

A patient reported as positive twice within 28 days will be counted only once. This will help prevent hospitals being blamed for infections that have occurred before patients are admitted.

Dates of admission will be recorded to further detect patients who have been infected before entering hospital.
