New guidance on use of bowel cleansing agents

  • Comment

New consensus guidance on the prescription and administration of bowel cleansing agents has been produced.

The guidance has been produced by The British Society of Gastroenterology, the British Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology, the Renal Association, the Royal College of Radiologists, and the Royal College of Surgeons.

This follows a Rapid Response Report from the NPSA in February 2009 that highlighted the dangers of prescribing these preparations to people with contraindications. The guidance includes; contraindications; choosing a preparation; how it should be taken.
