Nurses told how to build strong case for training

An eight-point plan designed to help nurses make a watertight case for their post-registration training needs is to be launched this week by an education charity.

The Education for Health (EfH) plan, revealed exclusively by NT, will help nurses of all disciplines make their case for training, which the charity hopes managers will find difficult to ignore.

Presented as a business case, the plan shows nurses how to map national and local trends, Department of Health policy, clinical guidance and government targets against their chosen course and show why it would benefit them.

There is also a section for nurses to outline the cost of training and to estimate the money that could be saved by improving their skills.

Although the document uses asthma as an example and is based on training provided by the charity, NT understands it can be transferred to any area, workplace or course available to nurses.

Monica Fletcher, EfH chief executive, said: ‘We wanted to help nurses put a case to be able to say, “it is not just training for training’s sake and this is how it fits into NHS priorities”, and because nurses are not often very good at negotiation, we wanted to give them the armoury to do so.’

Ms Fletcher said she hoped the tool would go some way to removing barriers to training. ‘It should help nurses get the funding for training where it’s appropriate and in a way that they don’t feel like they are having to go cap in hand,’ she added.

The charity produced the document after a survey it carried out found that one in five practice nurses carrying out asthma diagnosis had not received relevant accredited training, as reported by NT last October.

The plan will be available at Education for Health’s website from this week.
