Cleanliness and infection control lacking at Mid Staffs, say witnesses

Many witnesses told the inquiry into care failings at Mid Staffordshire Foundation Trust about a lack of cleaning on wards, leaving patients in a dirty state.

They said hygiene was often poor, with the same cloth used to clean ward surfaces and toilets, rooms used by patients with C. difficile were not cleaned before the next patient was admitted, and hand gel containers were often left empty.

The report said these deficiencies were unlikely to be isolated mistakes.

  • The Infection control team/link nurses are there to implement safe and correct practices, unfortunately they cannot be on the ward 24 hrs a day.
