Diabetes safety project rolled out

  • Comment

A pilot project to improve safety for patients with diabetes is being rolled out this month throughout the Royal Free Hospital after its success on four wards.

The scheme improves intravenous insulin administration to stabilise patients’ blood sugar when they are acutely unwell, or before or after surgery, and therefore improve patient safety.

It was started 16 months ago and feedback from doctors and nurses has been unequivocally positive.

Medical teams on four wards were provided with a new diabetes patient record chart, standardised guidelines for treating dangerously low blood sugar and an insulin sliding scale pack containing a standardised prescription.
