A new initiative has been introduced by a hospital trust in the South West to help identify and better support newly qualified members of staff during their first year of work.
The first 12 months at a new job can be daunting, especially for newly qualified clinical staff making the transition from education to healthcare settings.

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust’s desire to make this period for new staff as smooth as possible led it to pioneer an initiative to assist new staff in their transition.
The trust has, starting from this month, introduced pin badges to identify newly-minted nurses, midwives, and operating department practitioners.
The gold and green badges identify new staff members during their first year at the trust, allowing senior staff to walk with the new members throughout their transition, said the trust.
The organisation’s heads of nursing created the new badge after examining feedback from past preceptees on the assistance offered by the trust, which it said was one of its priorities.

“It is really important that our new colleagues feel welcome and are looked after as best as possible,” said trust preceptor lead Gary Hallett.
“It will help our more senior staff to recognise who needs a bit more support and to take this into consideration,” said Mr Hallett.
The trust intends for the badges, paired with an existing preceptorship course, to make the first year working as a qualified nurse easier and provide greater learning experiences for the new staff.
New and old staff alike have welcomed the initiative, said the trust, adding that it had already been contacted about the idea by other trusts around the country.
“Since tweeting about it a few days ago, we’ve already been contacted by a number of trusts across the UK who are keen to adopt the idea, too,” said Mr Hallett.
