'No excuse' for privacy and dignity failings at Mid Staffs

  • Comment

The report investgating serious failings at Mid Staffordshire Foundation Trust has said there is ‘no excuse’ for the many cases where patients’ dignity was affected, as reported by patients and their families.

They spoke of incontinent patients left in degrading conditions; patients left not fully dressed in full view of passers-by; patients handled in unskilled ways causing pain; failure to refer to patients by their name; and rudeness or hostility.

The report said: “However difficult the circumstances, there is no excuse for staff to treat patients in the manner described by some witnesses to the inquiry. Respect for dignity must be a priority of care and must be at the forefront of clinicians’ minds.”
