Nottingham maternity staff create their own ‘Call the Midwife’ fundraising calendar

Maternity staff from Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust have created their own calendar themed on the hit BBC TV show Call the midwife.

A group of 29 members of trust staff from Ward C29 at Queen’s Medical Centre came up with the idea in order to raise money to refurbish the breakfast room for patients.

“It was fantastic to have so many staff willing to get involved”

Catherine Frain

The Nottingham team said they were inspired by a similar calendar produced in 2015 by staff at Reading Hospital.

Deputy ward sister Kathryn Merrill brought the fundraising idea to the maternity ward’s shared governance council, a group of staff that have collective ownership to develop and improve practise.

Catherine Frain, midwife and chair of the council, said: “We put up a poster on the ward to register interest. It was fantastic to have so many staff willing to get involved.”

The group then arranged sponsors, outfits and locations to bring “call the midwife” to life in Nottingham, said the trust.

Hair and makeup was provided by students at New College Nottingham and the photography was donated by Saul Isacc Photography.

Shot in the hospital and at University of Nottingham campus, the group dressed up as midwives, patients and nuns to take photos themed around the months of the year. One of the ward’s midwives, Sian Gregory, said it was a “long, but really fun day”.

A variety of staff are featured in the calendar including midwives, healthcare assistants, reception staff, consultants and cleaning staff. Midwife Joanne Woodhall added: “It was great to work with so many different people you wouldn’t necessarily see that much of day to day.”

Maternity matron Gemma Herbert said: “Organising and producing this wonderful calendar is one of the many brilliant ways they [Ward 29] not only have raised money for NUH but also worked together as a team. We all feel incredibly proud of them and all their hard work.”

The Call C29 calendars are available for sale from the Nottingham Hospitals Charity website. The first one was bought by the trust’s recently retired chief executive Peter Homa.
