RCN backs independent inquiry into Mid Staffs

  • Comment

The RCN has called for a full independent inquiry into the failings at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust.

Peter Carter, general secretary of the RCN, said: ‘We feel it is in everyone’s interests if there is a full independent inquiry.

‘We do not think it needs to be held in public, because people can often be more forthcoming if they are not appearing in some kind of ‘star chamber’, he added.

‘The important thing is that it is totally independent and reports its findings publicly,’ Mr Carter said.

The Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust received heavy criticism from the Healthcare Commission in March for ‘appalling’ care that led to an estimated 400 deaths between April 2005 and March 2008.
