Thigh-length surgical stockings reduce blot clots

  • Comment

Treating patients with thigh-length surgical stockings, rather than knee-high socks, can reduce life-threatening blood clots, according to a study published online in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Edinburgh University researchers gave 1,552 immobile patients thigh-length stockings and 1,562 patients below-knee stockings to wear while they were in the hospital.

They found 6.3 per cent of those who received thigh-length stocking developed DVT in the popliteal or femoral veins, compared with 8.8 per cent of those given below-knee stockings.
