Nurses are the most trusted profession, suggests a poll in which participants rated them more trustworthy than fellow public sector workers including doctors, teachers and the police.
The poll found 93% of participants would “generally trust” a nurse, compared to 91% for doctors and 88% for teachers – the three professions making up the top three.
“Good news for nurses everywhere”
Journalists, government ministers and politicians generally made up the three professions deemed least trustworthy by poll participants – scoring 24%,20% and 15%, respectively.
Meanwhile, 48% of people who took part in the poll said they trusted managers in the NHS.
The research, involving 1,019 UK adults, was carried out by pollsters Ipsos Mori between 14 October and 1 November.
Participants were read out a list of 24 professions and jobs, and asked “if you generally trust them to tell the truth or not”.
It is the first time that nurses have been included in the company’s annual veracity index, the findings from which have been published and analysed in a joint report with Mumsnet.
Revealing the results on social media site Twitter, Ben Page, chief executive of Ipsos Mori, described them as “good news for nurses everywhere”.
