Sitting down 'shortens lifespan'

  • Comment

The amount of time people spend sitting down, not just the amount of physical activity they undertake, can affect their risk of dying early, US research has found.

The study, carried out by the American Cancer Society, which involved more than 120,000 people, concluded that public health campaigns should encourage people to spend less time sitting down as well as encouraging them to be physically active.

The study, published online in the American Journal of Epidemiology, found this was often not mentioned.
