Stretching minimises pain from high heels

Women who regularly wear high heels should perform regular stretching exercises if they are to minimise the chance of pain when they walk with flat feet, researchers from Manchester Metropolitan University have said.

They analysed 20 women who suffered pain when not wearing high heels and found the muscle fibre length in their calves had shortened, but their Achilles tendon had not stretched to compensate.

Their Achilles tendons had thickened and stiffened, allowing the women to walk pain-free when in high heels, but the change caused pain when using flat feet.
