Attracting our future nurses

  • Comment

At a recent meeting with the CNO and SHA Chief Nurses, the important issue of identifying and encouraging the future nursing workforce was discussed.

Allowing school children to do work experience in the NHS was suggested as one possible way to raise more interest in nursing as a career.

To support NHS trusts to increase work experience opportunities for young people, NHS Employers has produced Enabling work experience in the NHS. The toolkit highlights best practice programmes from across England and offers a framework for staff to use to develop their own work experience schemes.

It also includes a section that ‘busts’ the myths around work experience, such as work experience students require special insurance arrangements and patient confidentiality precludes work experience in many clinical areas - both are myths.
