Integrated back care may speed up return to work

  • Comment

Patients receiving integrated care for back pain, directed at both the patient and their workplace, return to work more than twice as quickly as those who receive “usual” care.

Researchers from the Netherlands and Canada looked at the effect of an integrated care programme on 134 working age patients with chronic low back pain.

They found that patients who had adjustments at their place of work and a graded exercise programme went back to work after 88 days, compared with 208 days for other patients.

The research was published in the BMJ.
