Video to support nurses with revalidation in social care settings

A video guide on revalidation aimed at nurses working in social care has been launched by the Foundation on Nursing Studies.

The new system to ensure nurses and midwives demonstrate their practice is up-to-date every three years was introduced on 1 April this year. Brought in by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, it replaced the old post-registration education and practice (PREP) system.

Revalidation requirements include compiling five pieces of practice-related feedback and preparing five written reflective accounts relating to the NMC code. Registrants also have to complete a minimum of 35 hours of continuing professional development in the three years before revalidating.

The foundation said it backed revalidation, describing it as a “positive opportunity”, because it encouraged an ongoing process of “sharing, reflecting and improving”.

However, it noted that nurses working in social care settings sometimes missed out on training and development opportunities that were more readily available to those in other areas of care.

FoNS chief executive Dr Theresa Shaw: “The social care sector plays a vital role in caring for people who are vulnerable, have long term care needs and/or are at the end of life – yet the nurses working in these areas can miss out on support and development opportunities.

“I am delighted we are launching this practical resource to help nurses working in social care prepare for revalidation,” she said.

The new animation – A practical guide to revalidation for nurses working in social care – is supported and funded by the RCN Foundation.

Deepa Korea, head of RCN Foundation, said: “We are delighted to have funded this animation. We hope it has a positive impact not only for nurses in social care but to all nurses.”

Kate Lettin, revalidation officer at the NMC, added: “This is a very positive and practical video that will be extremely useful for nurses working in social care.”

This free video animation, which offers a step-by-step guide to nursing revalidation, is available via the FoNS website. The script is also available to download.
