UV rays 'penetrate' beach shades

Beach umbrellas do not block out all harmful UV rays from the sun, research has found.

A team of researchers from the University of Valencia found that 34 per cent of ultraviolet radiation passes under beach umbrellas, risking damage to the skin.

They found the umbrellas do block all radiation coming directly towards the umbrella, but they warn that people should take extra precaution against the harmful rays because of the radiation that filters under the umbrella.
