Sarah Morgan has been appointed as the only mesothelioma clinical nurse specialist in Wales.
She will support asbestos-related cancer patients through the post, which is being hosted by Hywel Dda University Health Board.
“I am committed to raising the profile of mesothelioma”
The new two-day-per-week post has been made possible through funding from the charity Mesothelioma UK and will be the 13th addition to its UK specialist nurse team.
Ms Morgan will work with colleagues across Wales to ensure that there is access to specialist support and information, and to promote a growing appreciation of mesothelioma.
She will also promote awareness about the options available for mesothelioma patients by supporting, signposting and disseminating information, leading and generally offering appropriate clinical support.
Ms Morgan has been a nurse for over 30 years, having undertaken her initial nurse education at Glangwili General Hospital, Carmarthen and Swansea University.
She has previously worked as a Macmillan clinical nurse specialist in palliative care for Pembrokeshire and as specialist palliative care nurse for Papworth Hospital in Cambridge.
In her most recent post as a Macmillan lung cancer specialist nurse in Hywel Dda University Health Board, she set up the board’s specialist nurse service and won an award for improving patient experience.
Specialist mesothelioma nurse appointed for Wales
As a member of National Lung Cancer Forum for Nurses, Ms Morgan has contributed to documents and guidelines, and presented at local, national and international conferences.
She is a member of local and national strategic forums for development in lung cancer within the Welsh cancer network. Sarah is also a founder member of the charity Lung Cancer Campaign with aims to promote early diagnosis and improve services.
Ms Morgan described her new role as a “great privilege”. She said: “As the only Mesothelioma UK nurse in Wales, I am committed to raising the profile of mesothelioma and will seek to influence the development of specialist services across Wales.”
Liz Darlison, Mesothelioma UK director of services and consultant nurse, added: “I’m delighted to welcome Sarah to Mesothelioma UK, a passionate and dedicated team that is having a remarkable impact across the UK.
“With the increasing number of mesothelioma patients across the country, Sarah will focus on patient care, encouraging more clinical trials and research to take place, and taking the lead to support and educate more people on all aspects of mesothelioma,” she said.
