NHS could pay for treatments in Europe

  • Comment
Patients will have a right to shop around Europe for the best healthcare under new proposals by the European Commission.

The proposals would mean that EU governments would have to cover patients’ costs if they chose to have operations in other European countries.

However costs would be paid along the lines of similar procedures in other EU countries and would be conditional to having healthcare insurance.

A Commission statement said: ‘Patients will be able to make an informed choice, in full confidence about the reimbursement that they are entitled to and about safety and quality of the care they will receive. It also provides the basis for increased co-operation between healthcare systems.’
