NHS Pension rights under threat

  • Comment
Nurses joining social enterprise schemes that were formerly part of the NHS may not be entitled to NHS pensions, an example in south London suggests.

The NHS Next Stage Review said that nurses would be able to transfer from the NHS to social enterprise schemes without losing pension rights (NT News, 1 July, p3).

But the Department of Health has indicated that this would not necessarily be so for staff joining Kingston PCT after it has become an enterprise scheme.

A DH spokesperson said: ‘Any staff currently employed who are in the NHS scheme can continue. In terms of new staff, that is a matter between the social enterprise and new staff.’

This raises the possibility of a two-tier workforce with different sets of pension rights.
