NMC appoints external expert as interim chief exec

The NMC has appointed an external management consultant as its new interim chief executive.

The council announced today that Graham Smith will hold the post from 15 September until a permanent replacement is found.

Mr Smith has held a number of positions in the NHS including being chief executive of Nottingham Healthcare NHS Trust, Lincoln and Louth NHS Trust and City Hospital NHS Trust. On leaving the health service in 2004, Mr Smith formed a senior management consultancy firm, MWTB Limited.

NMC President Jill Crawford said: ‘Graham will lead the operational work to ensure that the NMC regains the trust and confidence of our stakeholders and the public whom we serve.’

The interim post had initially been filled by assistant registrar Kathy George, following the departure of Sarah Thewlis at the start of August in the wake of a highly critical report on the regulator’s performance by the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence.

The NMC will begin the recruitment process for a permanent chief executive later this month.
