NMC appoints new interim chief executive while search continues for permanent incumbent

The NMC has appointed a new interim chief executive to take over from Graham Smith in March.

Kathy George, who is currently the NMC’s director of standards and registrations, and assistant registrar, will hold the post until the NMC manages to appoint a permanent chief executive.

NMC chair professor Tony Hazell said: ‘During the course of the next few months, we will be undertaking the process to recruit to the post on a permanent basis.

‘It is my view that the NMC's interests will be best served by continuing on our present course through an internal appointment,’ he said.

The regulator had successfully selected a new chief executive in December last year but the chosen candidate was ‘unable to take up the post for wholly personal reasons’, an NMC spokesperson told Nursing Times earlier this month.

The NMC's new 14-member appointed council, appointed last month, took over responsibility for leading the regulator’s strategy on 1 January.
