Nurse helps Bulgarian children's charity

A Shropshire nurse is heading to Bulgaria next month to help abandoned children with learning difficulties.

Rachel Leonard, a children’s nurse at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Oswestry, will be swapping her theatre recovery uniform to spend two weeks volunteering in the eastern European country.

The volunteering scheme is being run by the Bulgarian Abandoned Children’s Trust.

During the two-week self-funded trip, Ms Leonard will be living in the city of Sofia. She will be helping with a small group home of a dozen children aged 11-18, all of whom have learning disabilities.

She said: “I have always wanted to use my skills outside the UK with the opportunity of giving something back.”

She added: “I would never have found out about this organisation if my friend had not mentioned it to me and, with more awareness, there are bound to be many more people who would gladly support the organisation.”
