Nurse nominated for romantic novel award

Senior nursing lecturer Jean Fullerton has been shortlisted for the Romantic Novelists’ Association’s 2010 Romance Novel of the Year Award.

The former district nurse, who now teaches pre and post registration nursing at London South Bank University, started writing after attending an NHS Leading Empowered Organisations (LEO) course in 2002.

Speaking about the nomination she said: “I am really excited. It’s such an honour to be in the last six especially as it’s only the second book I have had published. Having my book whittled down from the 280 titles that were in running is an amazing feeling.”

Jean thinks her nursing career has helped her writing as well as her keeping sane: “Working as a district nurse meant I met so many different people, which has helped me develop characters because you get used to seeing how people tick when you assess them.

“I still work as a nurse because it’s wonderfully levelling and lets me keep my feet on the ground even if my head is in a story.”

The winner of the award will be announced on 16 March 2010 at the awards lunch at the Royal Garden Hotel, Kensington.
