Nurses call on government to tackle binge drinking

  • Comment

The Royal College of Nursing has called for more government action on binge drinking after a recent death.

Gary Reinbach, 22, died of alcoholic liver failure in hospital after starting binge drinking aged 13.

Dr Peter Carter, Chief Executive of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) said the death showed how damaging binge drinking could be.

‘We need more effective regulation that ensures retailers don’t engage in unscrupulous practises which encourage customers to drink to excess,’ he said.

‘At the same time, we need to step up public health campaigns that educate the public about the dangers of binge drinking.’

He also highlighted the importance of clear labelling on alcoholic drinks.
