Nursing students experience verbal abuse

  • Comment
Nearly half of all nursing students have experienced workplace verbal abuse, according to a study.
The research questioned 114 third-year nursing students in England and asked them about their experiences on wards.

It found 45.1% of respondents had experienced verbal abuse, 34.5% had witnessed other students being verbally abused and 65.5% were aware of other students being verbally abused.

In 64.7% of cases the abuse involved patients, in 15.7 it involved visitors or relatives and 19.6% it involved other healthcare workers.

Students reported death threats, racial abuse, sexually oriented abuse and the majority incidents occurred in general medical, mental health and general surgical clinical areas.
