Once-daily ulcerative colitis pill

  • Comment
The first once-daily pill for ulcerative colitis will be launched in the UK on 5 November.

MMX mesalazine (Mezavant XL), manufactured by Shire, is designed to provide gastro-resistant, prolonged release of mesalazine throughout the colon.

Available as a single strength tablet, containing mesalazine 1,200mg, the drug is to be taken in a once daily dose of two to four tablets. It is indicated both for the induction of clinical and endoscopic remission in patients with mild to moderate, active ulcerative colitis, and for maintenance of remission.
