One in four workers experience work related stress in times of recession, according to a study by the universities of Nottingham and Ulster.

Researchers compared the findings of two surveys of civil servants: one conducted in 2005, which involved 17,124 respondents, and one in 2009 with 9,913.

They found the number of staff taking time off due to stress increased by 25% during the recession and total time off due to psychological problems increased by more than a third.
