Online reports ‘improve’ care homes

Online report cards on nursing home performance could help improve patient care, a US study suggests.

Researchers studied 700 nursing homes whose performances were published on the internet in the ‘Nursing Home Compare’ report card in 2002.

Following publication of the report cards, the authors said the number of people who were physically restrained decreased and residents’ pain levels improved.

But Frank Ursell, chief executive officer of the Registered Nursing Homes Association, warned that any similar UK ratings system would have to be implemented carefully as it could cause confusion for both patients and their families.

The study is due to be published in Health Services Research.
