What was it like?
This is a short pocket sized and handy introduction to clinical psychology written from the perspective of the psychologist. It is insightful and does what it says on the tin. It demonstrated to the reader that there is no magic or mysticism in clinical psychology, rather just a good understanding of the human psyche.
What were the highlights?
This book has many case studies and activities to help link theory and practice and prompt personal reflection in any practitioner or reader. I did feel that there could have been more detail in the studies, but then, that being said it was a “short introduction” not a full blown doctoral thesis. In my humble opinion it is a well thought out and executed tool designed exactly to do “what it says on the tin!”, allowing the user to dip in and out of the book as required to get answers to questions or to guide them in a new direction.
Strengths & weaknesses:
A great pocket sized book that could be picked up and flicked through to find some clarification at a moment notice. While it is not a “be all” for psychology it is an able companion to remind you that you are going in the right direction. This is aided by the diagrams, charts and cartoons included within the text.
I did, however find it frustrating that the first 7 pages in the book were full of lists of other publications in the “Very short introduction” range and thought that this would have been better placed at the back of the book.
