What was it like?
There are so many levels to effective writing, and so many occasions when we need to write or present to the highest possible standard. Effective Writing in Psychology (Beins and Beins) is now a second edition, and fulfils its aim of guiding us when we need to write or present (for whatever reason) on any topic related to psychology.
By the time in our lives we are required to write or present, we already have a great deal of experience behind us. But this does not mean that we can ever assume total mastery of the art. Bein and Bein have taken a lot of trouble to guide us in a systematic, comprehensive and readable way.
What were the highlights?
This book has several highlights, most notably the chapters on ethics and surrounding concerns.
Strengths & weaknesses:
Effective Writing’s first and most obvious strength is its structure and readability. But its chapters that guide readers through the necessary considerations regarding ethics committees (and related issues) are outstanding. This book contains no obvious weaknesses, and benefits from a variety of writing styles so that information offered does not become stale or boring.
Who should read it?
This is an excellent book, which will prove valuable to many readers in different settings, not just students or educators. The parameters that govern a paper or presentation related to psychology are beautifully outlined here, and the guidelines offered could not be clearer. We may have to produce something in order to maintain our professional credibility, but there are also many occasions when a presentation is required at a job interview. This book can certainly help with that. While psychology itself may be outside the remit of what you do and wish to present, the psychological aspect always adds a huge depth to any presentation, and we all can learn a great deal here.
