’This book would be useful for those starting a nursing course, especially if they feel revision is not their strong point.’

Title: Fundamentals of Nursing: Study Guide 9th edition

Author: Geralyn Ochs

Publisher: Elsevier

Reviewer: Rebecca Myatt, Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust

What was it like?

This is a study guide designed to accompany the Fundamentals of Nursing textbook, a significant text for those enrolled on a nursing course in the US. The study guide follows the sequence of the text book in a logical format. Each chapter starts with a prompt to the preliminary reading required, which is aimed to guide revision by teaching pre-reading strategies.

This is followed by the Comprehensive Understanding section. As with other study guides, this is in outline format encompassing lists, tables and boxes as well as multiple choice questions. This outline covers the main subjects of each chapter in the corresponding book with the intention of aiding concentration, comprehension and retention of the relevant information.

The format is a good aid for revision as there is plenty of space for notes as well as answers, the student is guided on what to revise so they are not overwhelmed by the volume of information available. When the book is complete it would be a good method of revising for examinations as well as refreshing knowledge in the future.

The answer guide is at the end of the book so progress can be checked, areas of strength noted and areas for development worked on at the students own pace.

What were the highlights?

As well as straightforward multiple choice, many questions ask for a rationale for the answer given which is a valuable way to synthesize knowledge. The study guide is accessible and would be beneficial for anyone needing help with revision techniques especially if they have not studied for a while.

Strengths & weaknesses:

The study guide is based on the American Nurse Education System so some of the topics may not be relevant to a UK nursing studies course.

Who should read it?

Read in conjunction with the Fundamentals of Nursing textbook, this book would be useful for those starting a nursing course, especially if they feel revision is not their strong point. However it may be wise to check the relevance of the text with individual educational providers before spending any substantial amounts of money due to the American slant to some of the content.
