Title: Kindness: Change your life and make the world a kinder place

Author: Gill Hanson

Publisher: Capstone

Reviewer: Nicola Hamilton, community staff nurse, Northampton

What was it like?

Kindness is a positive, uplifting book which explores how kindness can be used to benefit ourselves and others. By following the tips, ideas, recommendations and advice the reader becomes more self aware and upon reflection has the opportunity and tools to be a kinder person. In creating this positive bubble of happiness to the people around them, the positivity would hopefully be passed on to create a wave of goodness and ultimately a happier world.

It is an easy read and split into two sections, being kind to others and being kind to yourself. Areas such as how to make a difference and, interestingly, being kind when others are rude and inconsiderate are covered. It outlines the positive approach to follow, moves on to key do’s and dont’s and a summary of key points to finish. In these times of high pressure, social media influences, depression, and unpredictable economy reading the book allows you to put things into perspective in your own life and more fundamentally be kinder to yourself, with the additional benefit of positively influence others.

What were the highlights?

The book encourages the reader to realise their potential for being kind to people and to realise the rewards that this would bring. The highlight of this book is the mindful and almost simple way the key messages are written and how massive the impact would be if they were adopted by everybody to emulate.

Strengths & weaknesses:

The chapters are split into different sections using heading, which makes it easier to follow. It is both a book to use for reference and one to continuously read through.

Real life examples would have enhanced some of the areas discussed.

Who should read it?

All health care professionals and general readers.
